Bougainville Island – The Autonomous Region of Bougainville

Sohano Catholic Mass Centre is located in Sohano Island, part of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

Bougainville is the eastern most island province of Papua New Guinea.

There are two main inhabited islands and 60 atolls that make up the Autonomous Region.

Buka Island is the second largest which lies to the north and the largest island, Bougainville, lies to the south.
The main island is 150 km long and 50 km as its widest point. The island is rich in mineral resources like gold, copper and zinc, and has abundant fish within its maritime borders.

It is blessed with abundant crystal clear running streams and rivers and enjoys hectares of virgin forest and fauna.

The beauty of Bougainville is immediately noticeable from the air with two ranges of mountains: the Emperor Augusta which ranges to the north and the infamous Crown Prince which ranges to the south.

The Crown Prince accommodates one of the largest open cut gold and copper mine in the world operated by giant Rio Tinto Zinc subsidiary, Bougainville Copper Limited.
The mountain ranges have two dormant volcanoes, one active and two one km wide.
Each lake is perfectly contained in extinct volcano craters.

On the east and west sides of these mountain ranges flow beautiful crystal clear running rivers and streams.
